Top 5 tips for buying a new Surfboard

  1. Do your research, have a look on the internet, speak to your mates and really understand what your looking for from your new board. Are you replacing an old faithful, looking for something completely different or just replacing a board that just doesn’t work for you. Going to a shop or a shaper with a clear idea in mind will help you to get the right board for you. There’s lots of brands out there with lots of models so narrowing it down to a couple is a good way to start.
  2. BE HONEST WITH YOUR SELF. If you don’t rip don’t buy a performance shortboard. Shapers and shops don’t really care if your a ripper or a complete novice, leave your ego at the door and you will leave with a board that is right for you, not Wilko at Snapper.
  3. Set a budget, if you cant afford a £700 its probably not the best idea to look at £700 boards online all day. There’s nothing wrong with 2nd hand boards as well. If the glove fits wear it, if the gloves cheap and it fits, snap that puppy up.
  4. Don’t be afraid of custom orders. Some people think custom orders are for the pro’s and really good surfers only. NOT TRUE, sometimes the best person to get a custom order is a begineer to intermediate surfer. So speak to the shaper or the shop and if they don’t have what your after, ask if they can custom order it for you.
  5.  Think about the waves you will be surfing. We all have constraints on when we can surf. Work, kids, wives, birthday parties. It all gets in the way of surf time. If your surf time is getting less and less and you get an hour window to get in once a week,  the likely hood will be that the surf will be terrible on that day. Think about this when your buying your new stick. Hyrbids and all rounders are great as they work in lots of conditions.

So when your after your next board take these 5 tips with you and you will be on the road to the right board that will make sure you enjoy every surf.
